Annual 30 m dataset for glacial lakes in High Mountain Asia from 2008 to 2017

Abstract. Atmospheric warming is intensifying glacier melting and glacial-lake development in High Mountain Asia (HMA), this could increase outburst flood (GLOF) hazards impact water resources hydroelectric-power management. There therefore a pressing need to obtain comprehensive knowledge of the distribution area glacial lakes also quantify variability their sizes types at high resolution HMA. In work, we developed an HMA inventory (Hi-MAG) database characterize annual coverage from 2008 2017 30 m using Landsat satellite imagery. Our data show that exhibited total 90.14 km2 period 2008–2017, +6.90 % change relative (1305.59±213.99 km2). The increases number were 306 12 km2, respectively, greatest occurred 5400 elevation, which increased by 249. Proglacial-lake-dominated areas, such as Nyainqêntanglha central Himalaya, where more than half (summed over 1? × grid) consisted proglacial lakes, showed obvious lake-area expansion.
